1st Rijswijk Textile Biennial, 2009
The museum in Rijswijk already holds a paper biennial and has decided that a textile version will nicely fill the gap in this two-year cycle. For the first year they will be showing work by 16 artists who originally worked as painters, scultors or graphic artists. Although they don't necessarily have the high level of skill that dyed-in-the-wool textile artist's have, many of them have a particularly original approach as they come at the field from an unexpected, fine-art angle.
A good range of techniques is represented. Monika Auch, Koen Loman and Jeroen Vinken all use looms and Auch manages the impressive feat of making three-dimensional scultural pieces while using a flat loom. Saskia van Dijk knits, there is embroidery, crochet and print. It's varied, it's unusual and, refreshingly - for British audiences anyway - the exhibitors are all unknown. Well worth a visit if you are in The Netherlands this summer.
