Textile and Technology, London
published in: BNO Vormberichten 11/07 summary: report on the 14th ETN (European Textile Network) conference in London from 14 - 20 september. The theme was 'digital - craft' and about 160 participants came from all over the world. The London Metropolitan University hosted the conference. 'The symposium 'Touch, textiles, technology: collaboration across Europe' was organized by the Constance Howard Research Centre in Textiles and precluded the lectures, visits and network events of ETN. At Constance Howard centre there is space to work in unusual combinations, like psychiatry and textiles in a project about 'suicide in young men in Western Ireland'. Presentations by Martin Conreen and Zoe Laughlin about their 'material library' and the shows at the Tate Modern made one's fingers itch with creative urge. At the end of the symposium the movie 'The man in the white suit', which plays with a futuristic scenario about the British textiles industry, starring Alec McGuinness was being shown. Mark Miodownik and Martin Conreen posed in their own white suits. The next day well known authors like Mary O'Mahoney and Sarah Braddock gave lectures on the status quo of techno textiles in Great Britain. Short presentations during networking events by ETN members from all corners of Europe set a realistic counterpoint to the intellectual work of the university members. After the conference there was a 3 day workshop with Vibeke Vestby and Bhakti Ziek on digital weaving.' www.etn-net.org www.goldsmiths.ac.uk/constance-howard
